Insecurity: Sokoto residents protest recurring attacks, kidnappings

Residents of Tambuwal Local Government Area in Sokoto State staged a protest on Friday against the escalating insecurity issues plaguing their region. The demonstration came in response to a series of attacks by suspected armed bandits, which have resulted in numerous casualties and abductions in different parts of the state. One such incident occurred recently in the Girkau community of Kebbe Local Government Area, where a person lost their life and an INEC staff member working in Tambuwal was taken hostage.

During the protest, local residents urged the Federal and Sokoto State governments to swiftly implement measures to safeguard lives, property, and restore security for the affected communities. The protesters highlighted the growing fear among residents, particularly farmers, traders, and rural dwellers whose livelihoods rely on access to farms and markets. They demanded an increase in security personnel and equipment in vulnerable areas, as well as intensified patrols, surveillance, and intelligence-led operations.

In addition, the protesters called for better coordination between the military, police, and other security agencies to apprehend those responsible for the attacks and prevent future incidents. They expressed concern over the impact of insecurity on agriculture and livelihoods, warning that if the attacks persist, residents may be compelled to abandon their homes and farmlands in search of safer locations.

The Sokoto State Police Command confirmed the protest and acknowledged the security challenges faced by the community. The Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufai, stated that the police were fully aware of the situation and actively monitoring it, taking necessary steps to maintain security and protect lives and property in the affected areas.
