Grand Collaboration proposed as Zahid says unity pact can cool Malaysia’s messy political quarrels

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 11 - Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has proposed a "Grand Collaboration" between political party coalitions to avert damaging political disputes, stating that the idea does not entail a merger of parties. Zahid emphasized that the concept is rooted in mutual understanding, aimed at maintaining political stability and stimulating national economic growth.

He referenced historical examples such as the Treaty of Hudaibiyah and the opening of Makkah to illustrate the importance of forgiveness, compassion, and unity in political cooperation. The proposed Grand Collaboration would not dilute any party's identity, as members would retain their respective affiliations. This initiative, which Zahid delivered during his presidential address at the 2026 Umno General Assembly, is guided by three principles: focusing on the ummah's welfare, respecting ideological differences, and practicing tolerance.

Honesty and sincerity are deemed essential for the success of such an understanding to prevent cycles of betrayal and broken agreements. Zahid also highlighted Umno's commitment to long-term national development, citing the New Economic Policy (NEP) and the National Transformation 2050 (TN50) vision as examples of the party's dedication to inclusive socioeconomic planning for future generations, including Gen Z and Gen Alpha.

The party's priority, according to Zahid, lies in establishing a robust national framework and direction for the next generation of leaders, rather than merely focusing on short-term electoral gains.
