Cross River seeks airport’s upgrade ahead AfSNET conference

The Cross River State Government is seeking closer collaboration with Nigeria's Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to upgrade the operations and passenger handling at Margaret Ekpo International Airport ahead of the upcoming AfSNET Investment Conference. Governor Bassey Otu made the request after learning about the expected influx of about 2,000 delegates from 19 African countries and the Caribbean for the conference, scheduled for November 12-14, 2026.

The governor urged FAAN to improve facilities at the airport, particularly the VIP International Lounge, to accommodate international visitors and dignitaries. He also called for enhanced security measures and better coordination between FAAN, the Nigerian Air Force, and other security agencies responsible for the airport. Otu emphasized that delays in airport-related projects should be addressed before the conference, which is set to take place on November 14.

Beyond the conference, the Cross River State Government expressed its desire for a long-term partnership with FAAN in various areas, including aviation infrastructure, passenger services, security, technology, and operational efficiency. Governor Otu highlighted that an efficient airport is crucial for the state's tourism and investment ambitions, as it serves as a major entry point for visitors and potential investors.

In response, Dr Umar Abdullahi Ganduje, Chairman of FAAN and former Kano State governor, stated that the authority is ready to work with the Cross River State Government to enhance airport operations and passenger experience. Ganduje acknowledged Cross River's growing tourism profile and the importance of efficient aviation infrastructure to support the movement of tourists, investors, and other visitors.
