Trump promises Americans $5,000 if Republicans win Congress

US President Donald Trump has pledged to provide every adult US citizen with a $5,000 payment if Republicans maintain control of both chambers of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections. Speaking at a Republican Party convention in Dallas, Trump introduced the proposal, which he dubbed the "Trump dividend." The payment would be granted to all adults residing in the United States, a population of over 245 million.

To put the cost into perspective, the proposal would amount to more than $1 trillion, roughly equal to the entirety of the country's defense budget.

It is evident that such a measure would face significant challenges in Congress. Making payments directly to US citizens is not a novel concept; Trump had previously proposed a $2,000 payment in the previous year but did not pursue the idea. The initial proposal aimed to distribute a share of US tariff revenues, excluding higher earners.

As citizens go to the polls on November 3, it is worth noting that the president's party typically experiences losses in such elections. With Republicans holding a slim majority, particularly in the House, a defeat in the midterm elections is widely anticipated.
