Ripple Adds New AI Capabilities to Treasury Offering

Ripple has enhanced its treasury product, GSmart, by incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, as reported in a Sept. 10 news release. The expansion adds new "policy-governed capabilities" for tasks such as forecasting, liquidity, risk, reconciliation, and reporting. Ripple cited Gartner's projection that by 2028, the average Fortune 500 company could have up to 150,000 AI agents in use, while only 13% of companies believe they have the appropriate AI agent governance.

This gap raises the stakes for how and where AI should be deployed. GSmart addresses this issue by separating financial calculations from AI interpretation, with deterministic engines handling calculations and AI interpreting policy, identifying patterns, and explaining recommendations. Treasury teams maintain control over each financial action.

Renaat Ver Eecke, senior vice president of Ripple Treasury, emphasized that GSmart works within organizations' own treasury policies to provide transparent recommendations while ensuring human oversight of every decision. The report also noted that AI agents are now carrying out core treasury functions autonomously, from liquidity decisions to FX exposure forecasting and cash flow optimization.

Companies like Goldman Sachs and Lloyds are developing and deploying autonomous AI agents for core treasury operations, reflecting a structural shift rather than an incremental one.
