Penang Wanita Umno wants state-based approach to political cooperation

Umno's political cooperation should be evaluated based on state-specific dynamics and realities, rather than a uniform approach, according to a Penang Wanita Umno delegate. Speaking at the Wanita Umno general assembly, Nibong Tebal chief Siti Hawa Mohd Nordin highlighted that Malaysian politics has become increasingly fragmented, with shifting voter support and uncertain outcomes making each election a unique challenge.

Siti Hawa emphasized that Umno must adhere to its core principles while remaining adaptable in its political strategy, especially when considering cooperation with other parties or standing alone. The Penang delegate proposed that central Umno leadership establish the principles and boundaries, while state Umno liaison bodies could propose political formulas tailored to their states' unique circumstances.

Decisions should be communicated to grassroots members, who play a vital role in day-to-day operations and elections. Siti Hawa cited Sabah, Johor, and Negri Sembilan as examples, illustrating that distinct political approaches in the three states underscore the need for diverse strategies nationwide. She cautioned that a one-size-fits-all cooperation method does not guarantee victory and that successful solo approaches vary by region.

Siti Hawa stressed that Umno's strength lies in its roots, experience, infrastructure, and bargaining power, allowing the party to have multiple options without compromising its principles. The delegate underscored that having several options doesn't indicate a lack of principles but rather the party's ability to avoid accepting terms that harm its interests or those of the people.

Focusing on Penang, Siti Hawa explained that the party cannot rely on a single voter base due to the state's diverse demographics and political landscape. She stressed the importance of strengthening Malay confidence while fostering acceptance among other communities, emphasizing that Umno must maintain a presence beyond elections by addressing the concerns of the general public.

Siti Hawa cautioned against Umno becoming a mere spectator in the spaces it helped create, advocating for the party to be recognized as a respected partner rather than merely a tool for transferring Malay votes to other parties. She urged the party to be prepared to contest independently, form alliances with other parties, or serve as a robust and principled opposition if fair terms cannot be reached.

Siti Hawa called for increased female representation in decision-making, particularly in candidate selection and administrative roles, advocating for a constitutional amendment guaranteeing at least 30% women candidates for parliamentary and state assembly positions. This provision should apply to at least 30% of seats held by Umno or those with potential to be won, serving as a floor rather than a ceiling.

She emphasized that failing to provide women with decision-making opportunities would undermine their contributions during campaigns and diminish their voices in candidate selection.
