One dead, two injured as building collapses during demolition in Lagos

A fatal building collapse during demolition in Lagos has left one person dead and two injured. The unfortunate incident occurred in the Alimosho area of Lagos State on Thursday morning. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) swiftly responded to the distress call, deploying its Alpha Eagle Response Team to the scene.

Upon arrival, the emergency responders cordoned off the area and initiated search and rescue operations. Preliminary investigations revealed that the building was in the process of manual demolition when it partially collapsed, trapping several individuals beneath the debris. Two adult males were successfully rescued from the rubble by emergency services, which included the cooperation of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).

While both survivors received immediate first aid at the scene, one adult male succumbed to his injuries and was confirmed dead by LASEMA. Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, expressed condolences to the deceased's family and extended wishes of recovery to the injured victims. The Lagos State Government emphasized its dedication to maintaining safety during construction and demolition activities, urging developers and property owners to strictly adhere to building regulations.

Furthermore, the government called for prompt reporting of unsafe building or demolition conditions through designated emergency lines. LASEMA and other security agencies are working together to expedite the rescue operation and ensure a safe conclusion to the incident. The Lagos State Government remains committed to enhancing emergency response capabilities through decentralization and increased resource allocation, with the aim of reducing emergency response times to 10 minutes across the city.
