One dead, eight injured in accident on Sege-Kasseh highway

On Tuesday afternoon, a fatal accident occurred at the Matsekorpe Junction on the Sege-Kasseh segment of the Tema-Aflao Highway. The collision, involving three vehicles - two Opel Astra taxis and a Toyota Corolla - resulted in one passenger losing their life and eight others sustaining injuries. Two of the injured were reported to be in critical condition at the Sege Polyclinic.

Eyewitnesses recounted the events to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), stating that the Toyota Corolla, with registration number GN 5838-20, was overtaking another vehicle when it struck an Opel Astra A with registration number GE 1269-13. The Toyota then collided with a second Opel Astra A, registration number AS 9643-13, causing damage to all three vehicles.

The Assembly Member for the area, Mr Ofori Apronti, highlighted a common issue with some taxis operating on the route - overloading, which could jeopardize a driver's ability to swiftly maneuver during emergencies. He urged commercial drivers to prioritize caution and follow road safety protocols to minimize road accidents.

Reverend Sampson Agbemabiase, the Head Pastor of the Assemblies of God Church in Sege, stated that the driver of the Toyota Corolla was speeding and overtaking dangerously. He recounted how he narrowly avoided being involved in the collision by swerving out of the Corolla's path. Rev. Agbemabiase also expressed frustration with the response to the accident, urging emergency responders to promptly attend to such incidents to potentially save lives.

The GNA noted that personnel from the Sege District Police Command were present at the scene, helping to manage traffic and alleviate congestion caused by the crash.
