Minor Earthquake Recorded Off Torrevieja Coast raising concerns about construction and ground stability

A minor earthquake was recorded off the Torrevieja coast at 2.25am local time on Wednesday morning. The tremor had a magnitude of 1.7 mbLg and originated from an epicentre east of the town. Preliminary data indicated the earthquake occurred at a depth of zero kilometres, meaning it was shallow.

Earthquakes of this low intensity are common occurrences in the Vega Baja region and are unlikely to cause any damage. However, the recent tremor has raised concerns due to the region's seismic history. In 1829, Torrevieja and several nearby communities were devastated by a major earthquake that killed hundreds of people and necessitated extensive reconstruction efforts across the Vega Baja.

The latest earthquake has occurred amidst opposition to a proposed hotel development in Torrevieja. Some residents have expressed concerns about the construction and ground stability of the project. Nevertheless, there is no evidence linking the minor earthquake to the development. To assess any seismic or structural risks associated with the hotel proposal, separate geological, engineering, and planning studies would be required.
