A Kuala Lumpur DAP leader has urged party members to remove ministers from their positions if former Prime Minister Najib Razak, currently serving a prison sentence for corruption, is granted forgiveness. Ben Fong, the treasurer of DAP Kuala Lumpur, emphasized that the party cannot remain in government if Najib is released. "This is a red line we cannot cross," Fong stated in a statement.

The Federal Committee for Mercy (LPWP) is set to meet tomorrow to consider Najib's petition for forgiveness regarding his alleged wrongdoing in connection with the 1MDB scandal. Najib, 72, was charged with misusing RM42 million of SRC International funds six years ago, fined RM210 million, and sentenced to 12 years in prison, which he has been serving at the Kajang Prison since August 2022.

The LPWP later reduced half of his sentence to six years and lowered the fine to RM50 million. Najib faces another charge of misusing power and distributing illegal funds, totaling more than RM2 billion, for which he is facing 15 years in prison and a RM11.38 billion fine. He is appealing this sentence. Fong noted that leaving the cabinet does not necessarily mean the end of the government.

DAP can continue to support the government from outside the cabinet to maintain political stability and promote institutional reform. "But stability cannot be an excuse to accept anything. Political leaders must acknowledge that there are certain boundaries we cannot cross."
