Insecurity: Katsina govt moves to recruit 708 vigilantes to protect schools

The Katsina State Government has announced plans to recruit 708 vigilantes to enhance security around schools, especially in areas with high security risks. Yusuf Jibia, the Commissioner for Basic and Social Education, informed journalists about this initiative on the occasion of the 2026 International Day to Protect Education from Attack.

Governor Dikko Radda had previously approved the recruitment as part of the government's strategy to bolster security near educational institutions. Jibia further mentioned that public schools were instructed to set up security committees, including representatives from nearby security agencies. The state has also deployed mobile police personnel to safeguard secondary schools, particularly those with boarding facilities.

Additionally, the government is constructing perimeter fences around schools to bolster their physical security. A technical working group has been established under the Safe Schools Policy, comprising government agencies, security institutions, development partners, and civil society organizations. This group will collaborate with Save the Children International to implement measures aimed at improving school safety across Katsina State.
