Lagos tightens security at Badagry border over child theft

The Lagos State Government has significantly increased security measures surrounding the Badagry border in response to the surge in child theft and illegal abduction cases in the region. During a recent meeting with heads of security agencies and parliamentary affairs, the Secretary to the State Government, Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, revealed that the bi-monthly security meetings have been extended from quarterly intervals due to escalating security concerns statewide.

Badagry's strategic position at the international border has made it a hotspot for criminal activities, primarily facilitated by the ease with which suspected child traffickers can evade apprehension. Salu-Hundeyin emphasized that the government would bolster security infrastructure in the area, including the installation of additional security lights, to deter potential offenders.

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) will furnish the state with updated statistics on child trafficking cases, comprising convictions and pending cases. The state government is also collaborating with relevant ministries, including the Ministries of Youth and Women Affairs, to combat child theft and trafficking.

Salu-Hundeyin highlighted that the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is constructing what she described as the largest mental health hospital in Africa, which is set to be inaugurated soon.

Furthermore, the government is enhancing community-level security through the Lagos State Neighbourhood Watch and engaging in regular discussions with local government secretaries, Community Development Committees, and Associations. The recent meeting also addressed safety concerns regarding some bridges in the state, which will be addressed to the appropriate ministries, departments, and agencies.
