The 1MDB Asset Recovery Unit has announced a lawsuit against four companies linked to DBS Bank and the associates of Jho Low, Eric Tan. The matter concerns bank accounts opened for associates Tan Kim Loong, better known as Eric Tan, of four companies - BlackRock Commodities (Global) Ltd, Platinum Global Luxury Services Ltd, Affinity Equity International Partners, and TKIL Global Investments Ltd. On Wednesday, the lawsuit was filed and presented to the High Court of Singapore for damages exceeding $1.1 billion.

The unit explained that five relevant accounts were opened with DBS in 2013, with Tan listed as the beneficial owner. The unit also revealed that Tan, as signatory to each of the five accounts, is a Malaysian citizen and close associate of Jho Low. The funds, once deposited into the five accounts, were not merely idle; they were transferred between the four companies without any valid reason and paid to third parties, including retail shops, private jet rental services, and nightclubs.

Funds were also used to purchase a luxury yacht. From 2013 to 2014, over $1 billion stolen from 1MDB and SRC International was channeled through these four companies. The 1MDB Asset Recovery Unit clarifies that the lawsuit against the four companies and the court's lawsuit against them is a recovery of assets for Malaysia, which is crucial for the victims of the scam, including 1MDB.

According to the unit, the bank, as the gatekeeper of the financial system, should have raised questions when an inactive company was used to hide assets, transfer large sums of money repeatedly, and then used the money to pay for luxury goods. However, no questions were asked. The unit's conclusion is clear: this is a rightful lawsuit by the court of appeal, and any recovered funds will be returned to the people of Malaysia.
