Hideo Kojima's Physint moves to Xbox after PlayStation cancels project

Hideo Kojima's upcoming action-espionage title Physint is now publishing under Xbox after PlayStation announced the cancellation of the project in mid-June. Kojima Productions received the unexpected news and promptly began searching for a new partner, eventually settling on Xbox. The designer and writer emphasized the importance of the game to both him and his studio, striving to maintain the project's momentum.

Xbox, already working with Kojima on the horror game OD, welcomed the decision. Kojima praised the new partnership, stating that Physint would redefine the action-espionage genre for worldwide players. Sony separately confirmed its decision to walk away from the game, expressing its strong relationship with Kojima despite their 30 years of co-operation.

Physint marks Kojima's return to the action-espionage genre following his departure from Konami in 2015, with his previous major releases being the Death Stranding games. The project's announcement at a PlayStation State of Play presentation in January 2024 described it as a "next-generation action espionage game" that would use cutting-edge technology to merge games and film.

Kojima indicated fan requests for a new Metal Gear game influenced his return to the series, which he previously helped popularize. Development is continuing under the new publisher, with Xbox and Kojima Productions planning to collaborate on film and television projects in the future. No release date or platforms for Physint have been announced yet.
