Google eases password manager switching on Android

Google, the tech giant listed on NASDAQ under the ticker symbol GOOGL, has introduced a new feature for Android users. This feature allows for the seamless transfer of passwords and passkeys between different password managers without the need for downloading files. When a user wishes to switch password managers, they are prompted to open the new app and choose an option to import credentials from their previous provider.

Android then scans the device for existing password managers and presents available import options. The user can review and authorize the transfer through their current password manager, after which the data is transferred between apps in a matter of seconds. The old method of transferring passwords involved downloading them into unencrypted text files, which left the credentials potentially exposed on the device.

With this new system, passkeys can now be transferred directly between services, a process that previously required users to recreate passwords on multiple platforms. The feature also allows users to export their data from their current password manager. Presently, Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden Password Manager, and Dashlane offer support for this new transfer experience.

Google has indicated that support for additional password manager providers will be added in the future.
