Google is making it easier to switch between password managers on Android

Google has unveiled an enhanced password manager switching capability on Android, eliminating the need for CSV file downloads during the transition to a new app. This innovative feature enables users to effortlessly transfer all their passwords and even passkeys between various password managers. To initiate the process, users simply launch their chosen password manager app and opt to import or copy passwords from their previous manager app.

Android detects compatible manager apps on the device and orchestrates the transfer process between both applications. Users can inspect the data being moved and confirm it with just a few taps.

The new method is compatible with passkey transfers too, so users won’t have to set them up again when switching to a fresh password manager app. Furthermore, this approach eliminates the risk of exposing sensitive data from CSV files. Google has announced that the new user experience is currently available on select partners and within the company’s own password manager app.

Leading password managers such as Bitwarden, 1Password, and Dashlane are currently supported, with more applications set to join in the future. The password manager switching feature will be accessible on all Android devices running version 8 or higher.
