Edmonton Oilers lose support of superfan ‘Mama Stanley’ after Formenton signing

Edmonton Oilers' decision to sign Alex Formenton has upset long-time supporter "Mama Stanley." Loewen, known for dressing as Stanley Cup during playoffs, announced she will no longer support the team. "I am deeply disappointed by the Edmonton Oilers’ decision to sign Alex Formenton," Loewen's post states. Although acquitted, Loewen cannot ignore her conscience regarding the team's decision.

Formenton was one of five players from Canada's 2018 world junior team accused of sexual assault. The NHL later reinstated all five players after charges were dropped. Loewen, a longtime hockey fan, developed her Mama Stanley persona in recent years, becoming a regular fixture at Oilers games. She feels betrayed that the team management chose Formenton despite her life-long support.
