LAWMA arrests Lagos resident for dumping refuse in drainage during rainfall

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has arrested a Meiran resident for illegally dumping refuse in a drainage channel during rainfall. The enforcement team, comprising LAWMA enforcement officers, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI), and mobile police, conducted the arrest based on a tip-off. The suspect, who resides at No. 13, Lanre Adefiranye Street, Baale Bus Stop, Meiran, was apprehended at the scene and taken to KAI headquarters for further legal action.

LAWMA's Managing Director, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, announced the arrest via an X post, emphasizing the importance of residents adhering to waste disposal regulations. He urged residents to refrain from indiscriminate waste disposal, especially in drainage channels, as it leads to blocked drains and flooding. The arrest is part of LAWMA's intensified campaign against waste disposal offenses, which have led to multiple imprisonments in July.

The state government has also targeted businesses and markets for enforcing proper waste disposal practices, sealing shops along the Tejuosho-Ojuelegba corridor for alleged improper waste disposal. LAWMA has consistently warned residents about the negative impact of improper waste disposal during the rainy season, highlighting the risks of blocked drains and potential flooding.
