Perak Assembly approves PKR chairman Mohamad Hairul as senator with 33 votes

IPOH, 10th September — In a recent vote, the Perak Legislative Assembly endorsed the appointment of Mohamad Hairul Amir Sabri, the PKR chairman of Perak, as a senator. He garnered 33 votes in a confidential secret ballot. Mohamad Hairul, aged 38, triumphed over Muhammad Zulkifli Muhammad Zakaria, the candidate from the Opposition coalition, who collected 26 votes.

The election followed the termination of Dr Mujahid Yusuf Rawa's term as a former senator and Perak Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman on May 24. A total of 59 votes were submitted by Legislative Assembly members. The proposal for the appointment was introduced by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and backed by Teja assemblyman Sandrea Ng Shy Ching (PKR).

Mohamad Hairul’s candidacy was put forward by Ng and seconded by Lintang assemblyman Datuk Mohd Zolkfaly Haron (BN). Mohamad Hairul, a native of Perak, possesses a degree in Political Science from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). He presently holds the role of chief special officer at the Office of Tambun MP, a position once held by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

His prior roles comprise serving on the Perak Water Board and functioning as a non-executive and independent committee member of Panel International Bhd. Since 2024, Mohamad Hairul has been serving as Perak PKR chairman.
