Court rejects police bid to extend Abdul Azeez’s remand, former TH chairman set for release

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10 — Former Tabung Haji chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim is set to be released this evening as the court refused to extend his remand period, according to his lawyer, Datuk Amer Hamzah Arshad. The police's request to extend Abdul Azeez's remand for an additional three days in order to aid the investigation under Section 420 of the Penal Code was denied, and the former Baling Member of Parliament is anticipated to be freed before 5pm once the current remand period concludes.

Lawyer Amer Hamzah Arshad expressed strong objection to the remand extension application, citing Abdul Azeez's readiness to fully cooperate with the police at any given time. He emphasized that the investigation could still proceed without the need for further remand, as Abdul Azeez is prepared to appear at Bukit Aman whenever required.

During his initial appearance in court, Abdul Azeez and two other former TH officers were remanded for two days to assist in the investigation of a fraud case involving TH hibah. Amer Hamzah noted that Abdul Azeez was under police custody during the remand proceedings and followed the instructions set by the police, including wearing the provided lockup clothes and handcuffs.

The lawyer further stated that Abdul Azeez has made over ten statements before and is committed to providing further cooperation with the authorities to aid in the investigation.
