BBU to focus on boosting Gauteng townships economic activities

The Black Business Unity (BBU), a non-profit organization, has announced its commitment to enhancing economic activities within Gauteng townships. This decision comes after the group decided to cease formal petitions to the government, citing a perceived lack of support for township economies. The BBU has criticized the Department of Small Business Development for neglecting funding accountability and failing to implement the Gauteng Township Economic Development Act.

Mike Molloyi, a founding member of the BBU, announced that the organization will launch a project to raise funds for boosting economic activities within municipal wards. The organization plans to establish "mini chambers" in different wards to raise funds, engage with communities, and advocate for taking control of economic activities in their areas.

Molloyi emphasized that the dependency on government for creating an environment to support businesses is not fulfilling its duty. The BBU had previously called for the establishment of economic development centers or one-stop centers within the townships, but these initiatives have not materialized.
