Apple unveils a foldable iPhone in Ternus’s first big test as CEO

Apple introduced its latest lineup of iPhones, including a foldable version called Duo, at its Cupertino headquarters. John Ternus, the new CEO who succeeded Tim Cook on September 1, unveiled the new devices. Ternus emphasized that there was "one more thing" before revealing the foldable phone, a nod to the phrase from the late founder Steve Jobs.

The Duo boasts the largest display ever on an iPhone, fitting into a pocket, with a 7.6-inch screen that is 80% larger than the newest iPhone 18 Pro. It allows users to use an Apple Pencil, a feature previously exclusive to iPad users. Duo is designed to "redefine the experience of using a foldable phone," according to Ternus.

With a starting price of $1,999, Duo is the most expensive iPhone to date. The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, featuring improved battery, camera, and performance, will start at $1,199 and $1,299, respectively. Preorders for these models begin on September 12, with availability on September 18, while the Duo will launch on October 23.

Apple highlights the new models' long battery life, faster charging, and cinematic effects in its camera. The company is also focusing on AI capabilities, such as Siri's privacy and security features. Competitors like Samsung, Motorola, and Google already offer foldable smartphones, but Apple's cautious approach is typical for the tech giant.

Forrester analyst Dipanjan Chatterjee noted that the foldable launch reflects Apple's strategic approach: waiting for the product to work properly and for the market to validate its viability before entering the category. The iPhone 18, however, carries a $100 price increase due to a global memory chip shortage.
