2027: NDC wins logo war, secures INEC approval

In a landmark ruling, the Federal High Court in Abuja has mandated the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to adopt and employ the modified digital logo of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for all elections conducted by the commission. The court also placed a restraining order on INEC, preventing it from obstructing or interfering with the NDC's use of its officially approved "two-finger" victory sign as the party's emblem.

The NDC's National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, announced the decision in a statement on Thursday. The judgment, rendered by Justice J.O. Abdulmalik, stemmed from a legal action initiated by the NDC following INEC's alleged removal of the party's modified logo from its database and replacement with the older association logo under which the party was originally registered.

This development follows the mounting preparations by political parties for the 2027 general elections, with campaign materials and party symbols being integral to mobilizing supporters and candidates. During its first National Executive Committee meeting on March 25, 2026, the NDC endorsed the modified logo, which was later forwarded to INEC.

However, INEC initially uploaded the new logo but later removed it and reinstated the old association logo without providing a valid reason to the party. The NDC attempted to resolve the issue administratively but had to resort to litigation after INEC failed to rectify the matter. In granting its judgment, Justice Abdulmalik directed INEC to approve the modified logo, including its symbol and colors, for the NDC's official use in all party matters, including all elections held by INEC in Nigeria.

The court's order also includes a perpetual injunction against INEC from stopping or interfering with the NDC's utilization of the digitally designed "two-finger" victory sign. The NDC's National Publicity Secretary expressed gratitude to the judiciary for its timely intervention, directing all candidates and party members to adopt the approved symbol on their campaign materials and other party paraphernalia.

The NDC assured supporters and candidates that there is nothing to worry about and assured them of their unity in the face of this resolution.
