Ukrainian drone hits Russian Arctic region, almost 3,000 km from border

On Wednesday, a Ukrainian drone struck an industrial facility in Russia's Arctic Yamalia region, approximately 2,800 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, according to officials. The attack marked Russia's longest-range attack since Moscow initiated its Ukraine offensive in 2022, as reported by Russian media outlet Mediazona. The drone attack in Novy Urengoy prompted a fire caused by falling debris, though no casualties or injuries were reported, stated the governor of Russia's Yamalo-Nenets region, Dmitry Artyukhov.

Novy Urengoy, a city with about 100,000 residents, is situated just south of Russia's Arctic Circle. Ukraine's Fire Point arms company claimed that the drone traveled over 3,300 kilometers and successfully hit its target in a social media post. Kremlin envoy to the Urals, Artem Zhoga, confirmed that this strike was the first of its kind to hit the Arctic region of his region.

Ukraine has stepped up long-range strikes on Russia in recent months, in response to daily Russian bombardments on Ukrainian towns and cities. In September, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky predicted that his country's drones would render Russian airspace entirely unsafe throughout the war. Mediazona reported that the strike likely targeted an energy facility, citing Ukrainian open-source intelligence.
