Transporters seek release of containers held by Islamabad police

Goods transporters in Islamabad have called upon the Ministry of Interior to release containers seized by the police ahead of the party's long march against the detention of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The opposition alliance, Tehreek-i-Tahaffuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP), is supporting the PTI in their protest against what they claim are illegal actions against their leader. The Islamabad High Court has decided to form a larger bench to hear the petition, citing potential constitutional implications.

All Pakistan Goods Transport Owners Association President Muhammad Owais Chaudhry expressed his concern over the seizure of container vehicles, stating that they should not be used for political purposes or to block roads during the anticipated protest on September 27. Around 100 container vehicles have been detained in areas such as Sangjani and Tarnol. Chaudhry argued that the containers should be rented out for use during the protest, rather than being impounded.

He further pointed out that some seized vehicles and containers have been parked in deserted areas, while others have had their cargo removed, leading to financial losses and business difficulties for the owners. The association has also received complaints alleging that released seized vehicles and containers were paid for, while the rest remained in custody.

They demanded a transparent investigation into these allegations and emphasized that their opposition to the impounding of vehicles should not be misconstrued as a political link to the PTI, as the commercial vehicles are meant for trade and economic activities only.

The association has warned the government against impounding the vehicles, stating that forced use for political purposes creates an impression of state coercion.
