“We’re the Outliers Here”: UK-Led Sanctions on Israeli Settlements Isolate the US

On September 8, the United Kingdom banned the import of goods from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. Eleven other nations joined the UK in signing a joint statement, vowing to introduce their own sanctions on trade with the settlements. The foreign ministers of the twelve countries called on Israel to halt settlement expansion, address settler violence, and investigate claims against Israeli forces.

Since 2023, Israeli settlers have displaced 107 West Bank communities, often with Israeli military backing. The United Nations' top court recently declared settlements in the West Bank, home to over 500,000 Jewish Israelis, to be illegal under international law. Despite this, US nonprofit organizations heavily subsidize these settlements and the US government rarely condemns them.

US officials swiftly rejected the British sanctions, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio stating they would not comply. Mike Huckabee, US Ambassador to Israel, warned of significant repercussions. Florida Representative Randy Fine threatened that Florida would boycott British companies if the UK imposed sanctions. This could potentially harm Florida more than the UK, as Florida is a major investor in the state with a law banning companies that boycott Israel from operating there.

Critics argue that the UK's move is ridiculous and damaging to US-UK relations. Six Democratic legislators have praised the UK's decision, urging the US to follow suit. They argue that the US must end its support for Israeli impunity, which is bolstered by US backing and punitive measures against those who defy it.
