No transport fare increase yet — GPRTU, GRTCC

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have stated that no decision has been made to raise public transport fares. This assurance was given after a meeting on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, between the two transport organizations and the Ministry of Transport to discuss the review of public transport fares for the 2026 fare window.

During the meeting, transport operators proposed an upward adjustment in fares. However, the Ministry of Transport informed the unions about the current economic situation and measures being taken to stabilize the Ghana cedi. The government's intervention of GH¢2 per litre on diesel was highlighted, aimed at reducing the impact of fuel costs on transport operators and passengers.

Both sides acknowledged the importance of the fuel intervention, but agreed that further discussions were necessary to assess its full impact on transport operating costs. The unions emphasized that the proposed fare increase needs further consideration before any decision can be finalized. To address the various cost factors involved in public transport operations, a joint team comprising representatives from the Ministry of Transport, GPRTU, and GRTCC has been established.

The joint team will review the cost factors and determine the subsequent steps, which will be communicated to the public. Until then, the GPRTU and GRTCC have emphasized that the existing approved transport fares remain in effect nationwide. They have instructed drivers, station masters, and transport owners to charge the current approved fares until further notice.

The transport groups have appealed to drivers, transport operators, and passengers to maintain calm, order, and cooperation during the review process. They have stated that the discussions aim to achieve a fair outcome that safeguards the interests of both transport operators and the traveling public.
