GPRTU and GRTCC suspend planned fare increase

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have decided to halt plans for raising public transport fares, pending ongoing negotiations with the government. This announcement came after a meeting on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, between the two transport bodies and the Ministry of Transport to review proposed fare changes outlined in the 2026 fare review cycle.

Initially, the unions had proposed an increase in fares, arguing that it was necessary due to rising operational costs. However, the government's decision to reduce the price of diesel from GH¢2.20 to GH¢2.00 per litre has prompted a reassessment of how fuel price fluctuations impact transport operations. As a result, the GPRTU and GRTCC have stated that no new fare adjustments have been formally approved.

The groups have set up a joint working committee comprising officials from the Ministry of Transport, GPRTU, and GRTCC to thoroughly analyze all cost factors impacting public transport. This team aims to determine a fare structure that accurately reflects the current situation faced by transport operators while also considering the financial constraints faced by passengers.

The final decision on the fare structure will be communicated to the public once the assessment is concluded. For now, passengers are advised to continue paying the existing approved fares throughout the country. Both unions have instructed drivers, station masters, and transport owners to continue charging the current fares until further notice.

They have appealed to drivers, transport operators, and passengers to remain patient and cooperative during this period of consultation.
