GPRTU and GRTCC suspend planned fare increase pending further consultations

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have decided to postpone any planned increase in public transport fares until further discussions with the government can take place. This announcement came after both unions met with the Ministry of Transport on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, to discuss a proposal for raising fares for the 2026 fare period.

The GPRTU and GRTCC had initially suggested raising fares, but the government's decision to intervene by reducing diesel prices by GH¢2.00 per litre has led them to reconsider the impact of fuel costs on their operations. Both sides emphasized that no decision to change the fares has been made as of now. They acknowledged the importance of the government's fuel intervention and agreed that it must be considered alongside the proposed fare increase before a final decision is made.

A joint task force, including representatives from the Ministry of Transport, GPRTU, and GRTCC, has been established to assess all cost factors before any final determination is reached. This collaborative effort aims to ensure that any eventual fare adjustments are fair and account for the interests of both transport operators and passengers.

The current approved fares will remain in effect until further notice. Both unions have urged all stakeholders, including drivers, station masters, transport owners, and passengers, to remain patient, cooperative, and calm during this consultation process. They have assured the public that the existing approved fares will continue to be enforced across the country in the meantime.
