Nigerian presidential hopeful Obi promises anti-corruption drive

Nigerian opposition candidate Peter Obi has pledged to tackle the country's cost-of-living crisis by fighting corruption and waste in government, according to AFP. During a campaign speech in Abuja, Obi, a former governor, emphasized the need to cut the cost of governance and invest in health, education, and poverty alleviation.

He acknowledged that fighting corruption in the oil sector could potentially reduce prices without reinstating the costly petrol subsidy that President Bola Tinubu scrapped last year. Though Obi's Nigeria Democratic Congress lacks the extensive infrastructure of Tinubu's All Progressive Congress, the presidential hopeful has focused much of his campaign on security, which he linked to poverty.

He called for increasing manufacturing jobs and improving the country's economy, which has been in a long-term decline.
