2027: Adebayo promises solar power on every Nigerian roof in 11 months

Ahead of Nigeria's 2027 presidential election, Adewole Adebayo, candidate for the Social Democratic Party, has vowed to install between 11 and 15 kilowatts of solar power on every Nigerian home within 11 months of his inauguration, if elected. During an interview on Arise Television's 'Prime Time,' Adebayo detailed his plan for nationwide solar panel manufacturing factories and training programs for Nigerians to install and maintain solar power systems.

He stated that he has previously advised on power issues and educated approximately 2,000 individuals about solar technology in his hometown, manufacturing both solar panels and lithium batteries. The only component he cannot produce himself is the inverter, which he currently imports. Adebayo proposed partnering with countries like China, Turkey, and India to establish these solar-panel factories in Nigeria, and training Nigerians to operate them.

He estimated that these clusters could generate up to 32,000 megawatts of electricity, addressing household needs and creating employment opportunities. Adebayo emphasized that the national grid would serve as a backup, ensuring uninterrupted power supply. He also advocated for government investment in strategic sectors such as aviation and manufacturing through operating and maintenance contracts, rather than fully relying on private operators.

Addressing issues of energy security, Adebayo highlighted that crude oil theft could be costing the country up to 900,000 barrels daily. He claimed that recovering this oil would enhance supply without additional government spending. In addition, Adebayo argued that investing in sectors like electricity and education could generate jobs, as workers in these fields would earn a living.
