'UAE is now home': German families on building lives in the Emirates

German families have proudly expressed their joy at calling the UAE their home, as President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed prepares for a state visit to Germany. Katja Guzmann, one of thousands of Germans living and working in the Emirates, moved to Abu Dhabi with her family in 2018. She and her husband, who works for Linde, a German industrial gases and engineering company, had three children aged 14, 13, and 6.

The family initially planned to stay for three to five years but now intend to stay longer. The Guzmanns purchased a house in Abu Dhabi and feel a strong sense of belonging due to the diverse and safe environment. Their daughter Lara, 14, has grown up feeling secure, and her international circle of friends is a significant aspect of her life that she wouldn't easily leave.

Her brothers, studying in Vienna, are also considering working in the UAE. Dorina Hacker, head of administration at the German International School in Abu Dhabi, has been a resident for 15 years, and her family still considers it their home. Kerstin Schwappach, the deputy head of the school, chose the UAE for personal reasons and appreciates the sense of freedom it provides.

A German-speaking women's group in Abu Dhabi supports new arrivals, offering assistance with practical matters and fostering a sense of community.
