McGonigle hits 16th homer but Twins rally to edge Tigers

DETROIT – In the wake of the 2023 baseball season, Tigers' president Scott Harris faces numerous questions, one of which is concerning the future of 32-year-old right-hander Drew Anderson. The team has a $10 million option on the starting pitcher for 2027, a price tag that is considerably lower than the typical market rate for a multi-faceted starter.

Anderson has consistently put in strong performances, yet his effectiveness has been marred by inconsistency. With his last pitch of the game being a high-and-tight four-seamer that Minnesota Twins' Kody Clemens sent into the right-field seats, the Twins secured a 3-2 victory at Comerica Park. Anderson had taken a 2-1 lead into the sixth inning, but his final pitch seemed to be the turning point.

He faced the minimum number of pitches in the second through fifth innings, helped by a couple of double-plays, including an exceptional throw from rookie left fielder Brett Callahan, who caught Luke Keaschall at third base on a 330-foot fly out. Anderson maintained control, mixing sliders, curves, and changeups off a four-seam fastball that ranged between 90-95 mph.

His efficiency was evident as he required only 40 pitches to complete the fourth, third, and fifth innings. He struck out six batters, four on his changeup and four on his curveball, with four hard-hit balls being recorded. After walking first-base runner Brett Callahan to start the sixth inning, manager AJ Hinch called upon both Tyler Holton and Beau Brieske from the bullpen to manage the situation.

Anderson's performance left the team in a favorable position to clinch the win in each of his last six starts. Despite missing an opportunity to tie the game in the seventh inning, the Tigers (66-79) have struggled to secure wins in one-run games during the season. For $10 million, Anderson's skills and contributions make him a valuable asset for the Tigers to retain.
