In His Apple Debut, John Ternus Unveils the US$1,999 Foldable iPhone Duo

John Ternus, Apple's new CEO, unveiled the company's first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, during his first major product presentation on Wednesday. The device, priced at $1,999, features a compact outer screen that unfolds into a 7.6-inch display, making it the largest iPhone screen yet. Ternus introduced the iPhone Duo alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, new Apple Watch models, AirPods 5, and iOS 27.

The iPhone Duo's design includes a 5.4-inch outer screen and a 7.6-inch inner screen, both with the same aspect ratio. The device is built from titanium and reinforced with ceramic fibers, and it offers IP68 dust and water resistance. Face ID and Dynamic Island technology are integrated beneath the display, eliminating visible cutouts.

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, priced at $1,199 and $1,299 respectively, bring increased storage options and improved camera systems to the premium line. Both models feature the A20 Pro chip and focus on photography and on-device AI. Their cameras now offer 48-megapixel sensors with a variable aperture ranging from f/1.48 to f/4.0, allowing for more control over light and depth of field.

Preorders for the iPhone Duo began on October 16, and availability started on October 23. The stock price remained under pressure following the event, falling to about $312.46, down roughly 1.2% from the previous close. Apple's foldable market entry is seen as a potential catalyst for the still-small foldable market, despite concerns regarding durability, hinges, screen creases, and resistance to dust and water.
