Why Consumer Trust Will Determine the Future of Fashion E-Commerce

ESW’s annual ‘Signals’ report spotlights the forces reshaping international e-commerce, revealing that as shopping journeys fragment, trust remains the critical factor determining conversion.

Why Consumer Trust Will Determine the Future of Fashion E-Commerce

The future of fashion e-commerce hinges on consumer trust, as shoppers increasingly expect seamless, localised experiences across fragmented touchpoints. In a recent "Signals 2026" report by ESW, over 23,000 consumer interviews across 18 markets were analyzed to uncover key consumer expectations and behaviors.

As the path to purchase becomes more fragmented, brands must ensure every stage of the journey feels connected to the brand universe, while delivering local relevance and reliability to drive conversions. Key factors such as local pricing, transparent duties, reliable delivery, clear returns policy, and trusted payment options matter significantly more than ever before.

Fashion tops the list of online categories for purchases, with 69 percent of consumers buying clothing, followed by footwear at 53 percent and electronics at 45 percent. To convert international demand, brands must address practical barriers like shipping costs and unclear duties/taxes. Payment preferences also vary by market, with cards being the most popular globally, followed by digital wallets in the UK.

AI adoption in e-commerce presents both opportunities and challenges. While 57 percent of consumers trust AI for price comparisons, only 31 percent are comfortable with AI-powered payments. Brands should leverage AI for search, comparison, and customer support, while exercising caution in its use for autonomous purchasing and payments.

The geography of growth is shifting, with emerging regions showing stronger consumer confidence and spending momentum. In the Middle East and Asia, 67 percent and 61 percent of consumers, respectively, report increased discretionary spending, compared to 30 percent in North America and 44 percent in Europe. Brands need to balance global consistency with local nuances, tailoring the experience to each market's preferences and behaviors.
