Trump threatens to block Canada’s Bombardier sales unless planes made in US

President Donald Trump has threatened to block Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier from selling their planes in the United States unless they start building their aircraft domestically. In a social media post on Monday, Trump stated, "NO MORE SELLING BOMBARDIER IN THE UNITED STATES! Their products aren’t good enough!" He continued, "If they want our Market, they must build here, and stop treating America like a 'piggybank."

Trump's remarks come amid escalating tensions between the US and Canada, which have a long history of strong relations. The US president has imposed a series of tariffs on Canadian products, leading to retaliatory measures. These retaliatory tariffs are set to begin on Tuesday, September 8. In response, Canada has announced tariffs on nearly $20 billion worth of 700 different US goods.

This isn't the first time Trump has targeted Bombardier since taking office in 2025. In January, shares of the Canadian aircraft maker plummeted after Trump threatened to decertify their large-cabin planes and impose a 50% import tariff on new planes until Canada certified the latest aircraft produced by US rival Gulfstream. Trump emphasized that over 50% of Bombardier's revenue comes from the United States, with the company relying on American buyers, companies, airports, and services.

"Canada blocks our GREAT American Banks and Companies, throughout the USA. They even blocked Gulfstream Aerospace from doing business in Canada, Completely unjust and unfair! That Era is OVER!" The move will impact major private jet companies, including NetJets, one of Bombardier's biggest customers. In December 2023, NetJets signed a deal with Bombardier to purchase 12 Challenger 3500 jets outright, with an option to buy up to another 232 aircraft in the future.
