Fahmi: Govt agencies to work together to tighten e-commerce rules, curb sale of prohibited goods

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 8 — Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil has announced that the government's agencies plan to collaborate to strengthen e-commerce regulation and prevent the sale of prohibited goods. Fahmi emphasized the importance of this cooperation due to existing gaps in the country's e-commerce ecosystem, as platforms are currently not licensed.

During a meeting with a major platform yesterday, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) discussed the issue, but Fahmi has not yet received an update on its outcome. Concerns have been raised about the laxness of one platform that permits the sale of prohibited products, such as fentanyl. Fahmi stressed that platforms should address the issue of fake accounts creating these prohibited products instead of merely removing search keywords.

He urged platforms to prevent the creation of fake accounts for drug sales. The Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, had previously expressed concern about this phenomenon.
