‘Practical Magic 2’ Review: Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman Still Charm in a Slapdash Sequel That Doesn’t

Twenty-eight years ago, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman starred in "Practical Magic," a film praised by critics but ultimately deemed a cult classic. Now, director Susanne Bier brings back the sisters, Gillian and Sally Owens, in "Practical Magic 2." Despite some technical flaws, the film captures the magic that made the first one so beloved.

Bullock and Kidman effortlessly reprise their roles as the free-spirited and tightly wound sisters, respectively. Sally, after losing her husband, casts a spell to erase her daughters' memory of magic and takes on a new life as a librarian. Meanwhile, Gilly and her aunts, Frances and Jet, remain sworn to secrecy about their witchy nature.

The sequel introduces Kylie and Antonia, who are now played by Joey King and Maisie Williams. While both actresses perform well, their roles are limited compared to the original's focus on sisterhood. The film's second issue lies in its increased reliance on digital imagery for the Owens family's magical abilities, which sometimes appears hokey and detracts from the heartfelt moments.

However, the film's true strength lies in the portrayal of Franny and Jet, played by Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest, who embody the mother, maiden, and crone aspects of witchcraft. Their autonomy and lack of frailty or loss are the film's greatest strengths.

Sally and Gilly's story remains at the heart of the sequel, with Sandra Bullock's character finding love with actor Lee Pace, whose performance as Ian Wright is particularly noteworthy. Despite some shortcomings, "Practical Magic 2" remains a flawed but magical film that will stick with you long after the credits roll.
