Lagos arraigns 100 suspects over VI, Lekki disturbances

The Lagos State Government has formally charged over 100 suspects with various offenses, including breach of public peace, unlawful conversion of government property to personal use, and actions that could potentially cause a breakdown of law and order. These charges were brought before the Lagos State Special Offences Mobile Court in Bolade, Oshodi, during a recent sitting.

The defendants were apprehended between 2 am and 4 am on September 4, 2026, across the Victoria Island-Lekki-Ajah region. Prosecution, led by Oluwabusola Omotunde on behalf of the Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, presented the charges to the court. At the arraignment, some of the defendants admitted to guilt, while others pleaded not guilty.

The Chief Magistrate of the Mobile Court, F.J. Adefioye, highlighted the importance of deterrence while ensuring due process. Those who admitted guilt were sentenced to community service or imprisonment, with the sentences to run consecutively. The remaining defendants were remanded in custody and granted bail after posting two sureties each.

The Mobile Court's Coordinator, Olufemi Adekunle, emphasized the government's dedication to maintaining law and order, protecting legitimate businesses and residents in the state. He also stated that similar court sittings would continue across the state to ensure swift prosecution of offenders and safety of public spaces. This development follows the ongoing activities of the Lagos State Special Offences Mobile Court, which handles public order, environmental, traffic, and other offenses under its jurisdiction.
