IT Ministry Revises Telecom Bill After Private Property Concerns

The Indian Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication has updated the Pakistan Telecommunication (Re-organisation) Amendment Bill following feedback received from a committee established by the Prime Minister. Originally approved by the National Assembly on June 11, 2026, the bill was subsequently introduced in the Senate on June 15.

However, concerns regarding private property provisions led to the formation of the committee. Critics also voiced their opposition on social media platforms, prompting the Prime Minister to appoint a committee under Azam Nazeer Tarar to review the contentious sections. The committee subsequently advised modifications aimed at reinforcing safeguards for private property and tackling issues related to right-of-way provisions.

These suggestions have been integrated into the revised draft, which the government is now set to resubmit in the National Assembly. The updated legislation is slated for presentation during the upcoming session of the National Assembly. Prior to its reintroduction, the government intends to consult its coalition partners on the proposed adjustments.

This action follows the withdrawal of the Pakistan Telecommunication (Re-organisation) Amendment Bill, 2026, from the Senate on August 28. The bill was pulled back before fulfilling its 90-day constitutional window, which would have required it to be discussed in a joint session of Parliament. Withdrawal was reportedly due to the absence of a scheduled joint sitting.
