Anwar demands tangible impact from government spending

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 8 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called on government officials to expedite the execution of public initiatives, emphasizing that success should be gauged by tangible benefits to citizens, not just spending amounts. At the Plantation and Commodities Ministry's monthly meeting, Anwar cautioned that while Malaysia's economy is performing well, the administration must avoid complacency.

"We should not feel satisfied and complacent. Firstly, our implementation must be more efficient and ambitious," he stated.

Anwar pointed out a disconnect between high-level government planning and the day-to-day experiences of ordinary Malaysians. He used the example of neglected Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) housing, where some projects have been left without maintenance for years. "We need to work quickly. In relation to housing, things like toilets should concern us," he noted, urging the government to adopt a focus on the needs of the people.

Regarding the agro-commodity sector, the prime minister announced a proposed RM425.65 million package for 2027, which includes RM280.03 million for oil palm replanting by smallholders and RM100 million for the Smallholder Farm Road Programme. He stressed that the priority should be functionality over aesthetics in infrastructure, ensuring that roads can effectively transport agricultural produce.

Furthermore, Anwar mentioned potential allocations for the Agro-Commodity Sector Disaster and Disease Control Fund (RM28.57 million) and strengthening downstream agro-commodity entrepreneurs (RM17.05 million). He reminded officials that simply increasing budgets is not enough; efficient execution is crucial to ensure that the benefits reach those in need. "We have achieved good performance figures, so I want to remind you all: don't be contented," Anwar concluded.
