UK govt condemns 'thuggish' Portsmouth migration protest

The UK government has strongly condemned the "thuggish" behavior of demonstrators in Portsmouth who blocked roads to prevent asylum seekers from leaving the city after arriving by small boat. This protest marked the second significant anti-migrant demonstration in a single weekend, following a similar event on Saturday where masked men blocked access to the Port of Dover.

The Home Office spokesperson stated that while the right to peaceful protest is fundamental to democracy, it must never descend into disorder. Social media footage captured the masked demonstrators, many dressed in black and with their faces covered, confronting police officers in riot gear who were surrounding buses intended for the asylum seekers heading to a processing center in Kent.

The migrants were successfully moved, likely to the Manston arrivals and processing center. French authorities had reported that a vessel carrying 140 people had departed from the French coast, heading for England's southern shores. Hampshire and Isle of Wight police and crime commissioner Donna Jones expressed concern, warning that southern England is not prepared to handle such arrivals.

Local Conservative MP Joe Robertson criticized the illegal crossing, stating that the route is not acceptable and called for a thorough investigation into the use of new routes by people smugglers. Despite a recent drop in crossings to their lowest level since 2018, authorities have noted an increase in the number of passengers per boat, totaling 16,513 migrants crossing the Channel since the start of the year.
