British Minister Emma Reynolds expressed strong condemnation over anti-migrant protests that occurred in Portsmouth, England. This was the second such protest in a two-day span, following a similar demonstration in Dover on Saturday.

The protests came amidst growing concerns over the surge in migrant arrivals to Britain. Reynolds highlighted that the number of migrants arriving has dropped sharply to around 17,000 from January 1 to September 1, a 43% decrease compared to the same period last year. However, the protests underscore the ongoing tensions surrounding immigration policies and public sentiment.

The far-right groups behind the demonstrations allegedly used communication apps like Signal and Telegram to spread their message. The protesters were reacting to the arrival of 140 migrants who had crossed the English Channel in small boats. Reynolds noted that this shift in the usual migrant route, with migrants now arriving off the southern coast instead of near Dover, presents new challenges for local authorities.

Donna Jones, the police and crime commissioner for the Portsmouth area, acknowledged that while the protesters were largely peaceful, the size of the gathering required additional support from officers stationed elsewhere. She emphasized that Portsmouth and other southern English locations are not equipped to handle both the public order issues and the processing of illegal migrants.

Reynolds's comments underscore the government's efforts to address the migration crisis while maintaining public order and safety. The protests highlight the complex interplay between immigration policies and public perception, as well as the challenges faced by authorities in managing large-scale migrant arrivals.
