Texas RB Derrek Cooper out for Ohio State game, 'foreseeable future,' Steve Sarkisian says

Texas freshman running back Derrek Cooper suffered a foot or ankle injury during Texas' 59-7 victory over Texas State, forcing him to leave the game in the first half, according to Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian. The extent of Cooper's injury and the length of his absence have not been disclosed by Sarkisian, but it is clear that he will not play in Saturday's crucial matchup against No. 1 Ohio State at Royal-Memorial Stadium.

Cooper's right foot or ankle remains in a walking boot, and the coach emphasized that he will be sidelined for an extended period. Cooper, a highly touted recruit from Florida, was originally expected to serve as a backup to transfers Hollywood Smothers and Raleek Brown. Despite his limited playing time, the physical nature of Cooper's contributions earned praise from Sarkisian during his first spring at Texas.

With Smothers and Brown putting up solid numbers, reserves Michael Terry and James Simon were called upon to fill the gaps after Cooper's exit.
