Texas football Week 2: 5 things to know about the top-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes

In the upcoming Texas football season, a high-profile game will take place at Royal-Memorial Stadium against the No. 1 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. Ohio State entered the season atop the Associated Press preseason poll, and they are set to become just the fourth top-ranked team to visit Austin. Here are five key points to know about the Buckeyes:

1. Julian Sayin, Ohio State's quarterback, is one of college football’s top talents. He led the team to a 56-3 opening win over Ball State and finished fourth in last year’s Heisman Trophy voting. However, Sayin has yet to score on any of his 42 rushing attempts in 2025.

2. Wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, another top prospect in the 2027 NFL Draft, has had mixed results against Texas. ESPN's Jordan Reid projected him to go fourth overall to Miami, and he has scored on 29 of his 171 career catches for Ohio State. Smith has had low numbers against Texas in recent games, including just one reception for three yards in the 2025 Cotton Bowl.

3. Ohio State's defense has consistently challenged Texas throughout Steve Sarkisian's tenure as Texas head coach. The Longhorns have failed to score more than 14 points against Ohio State in 30 games, including five losses.

4. Both Ohio State head coach Ryan Day and assistant coaches Matt Patricia and Arthur Smith have NFL coaching experience. Day began his eighth season at Ohio State, while Patricia had a 13-29-1 record with the Detroit Lions and Arthur Smith led the Atlanta Falcons to a 21-30 record from 2021-23.

5. This will be the third consecutive season that Texas and Ohio State face each other, marking the Buckeyes' third win in the last three games. Ohio State leads the overall series 3-2.
