North Korea vows nuclear-armed navy as US ally drills open

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un announced plans to transform the nation's navy into a nuclear-armed force, according to state media on Monday, as US allies initiated joint maritime exercises. The drills, involving Japan, South Korea, and the United States, commenced this week in an effort to counter Pyongyang's missile and nuclear threats.

Kim made these remarks during the commissioning of the Kang Kon, a warship that partially capsized during a launch in May 2025, in the port city of Wonsan. In his address, Kim emphasized the need to ensure the effective operation of nuclear combat systems for a potential war, stating that the new-generation destroyer should be capable of launching a deadly retaliatory blow at enemies.

Photos of Kim showed him with his daughter, Ju Ae, who is reportedly designated as his successor. Kim's reference to a "nuclear-armed navy" hints at the potential for these vessels to serve as launch platforms for tactical nuclear-capable cruise missiles. Experts suggest that Kim's comments may foreshadow the unveiling of a major strategic asset, potentially a new submarine capable of carrying submarine-launched ballistic missiles.

The US-led drills, known as Freedom Edge, are scheduled to continue through Friday in international waters east and south of South Korea's Jeju Island. These maneuvers came amid President Donald Trump's efforts to reopen diplomatic talks with North Korea, despite the latter's continued missile tests and condemnation of the reduced drills.
