N. Korea commissions nuclear-capable naval destroyer Kang Kon

Pyongyang, North Korea, has officially launched its newest naval destroyer, the Kang Kon, on September 6th, according to state-run news agency KCNA. The commissioning ceremony took place in the port city of Wonsan under the direct supervision of the country's leader, Kim Jong-un. Kim described the 5,000-ton ship as an "essentially offensive destroyer" and emphasized its role in the country's nuclear counteraction system, stating that it would deliver a potent retaliatory strike against adversaries.

He further stressed the importance of developing North Korea's navy into a nuclear-powered force for enhanced maritime defense and deterrence capabilities. Kim also vowed to continue bolstering the country's naval forces and deploying more powerful strategic assets. The Kang Kon will join its sister ship, the Choe Hyon, which was commissioned in June, both serving under the East Sea Fleet to safeguard the nation's maritime sovereignty and act as a nuclear deterrent.

Despite initial setbacks, including a capsizing incident during its launch attempt in May, the Kang Kon was successfully launched and subsequently participated in strategic missile drills in July. Kim personally oversaw the drills and subsequently ordered the warship's commissioning within two months. North Korea has been intensifying its efforts to equip naval assets with nuclear capabilities on both its eastern and western coasts, with plans to construct two large warships over the next five years, including 10,000-ton-class vessels.
