Martha Karua hits out at Ruto over foreigners crackdown, accuses govt of Xenophobia

Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, leader of the Wiper Party, has criticized the Kenyan government's crackdown on foreign traders operating without proper permits. Musyoka argued that the government's approach did not address the real challenges faced by Kenyan small businesses and that the enforcement exercise was handled chaotically.

He advocated for diplomacy, dialogue, and the rule of law to protect Kenyan businesses while allowing foreign entrepreneurs to operate legally. Musyoka pointed out that the main threats to Kenyan small traders are corruption, an unpredictable business environment, and inconsistent government policies, rather than foreign traders alone.

He also highlighted the role of tariffs, taxation policies, and pre-election tensions ahead of the 2027 General Election as factors affecting small traders. The Wiper leader called for transparency in processing affected foreigners and accused the government of using the crackdown to divert public attention from economic issues.

The government, in response, emphasized that foreigners cannot automatically engage in employment, trade, or business in Kenya without proper permits. They warned foreigners against violating conditions of their admission and stressed that visa-free entry or exemption from Electronic Travel Authorisation requirements does not grant the right to work, trade, or operate a business in Kenya.
