Sachsen-Anhalt's recent Landtag election has resulted in a historic victory for the AfD, with the CDU losing significantly. However, the uncertainty surrounding the formation of the new government and the appointment of the Minister-President remains unclear. Seven possible scenarios have been identified:

1. Patt: Despite AfD's clear victory, the preliminary results reveal a pattrick - no party received an absolute majority. Ulrich Siegmund, the AfD leader, initially stated he would only govern with an absolute majority, but now seems to be reconsidering. Four other parties together hold 39 seats, which may be insufficient to form a majority coalition.

The BSW, which narrowly crossed the 5% threshold, has also declared it will not participate in selecting the Minister-President. A potential deadlock of 39 to 39 could occur, even in a third voting round.

2. AfD forms a minority government: The AfD might still attempt to form a minority government without an absolute majority. They could appoint Siegmund as Minister-President with the support of the BSW, Linke, and possibly the CDU. Siegmund dismissed this possibility, stating that suspenses would not form the basis of a stable government.

3. AfD forms a coalition: The AfD might try to form a stable coalition, with Siegmund emphasizing that cooperation would only be possible if the AfD's core demands are met. A possible coalition candidate is the CDU, even though CDU leaders have ruled it out.

4. Overrun by right-wing defectors: Siegmund plans to discuss potential overruns with individual CDU deputies, hoping for AfD-aligned defectors. However, CDU faction chief Thorsten Frei ruled out the possibility of defectors, given the party's poor performance.

5. Overrun by right-wing defectors from AfD: Certain AfD members might decide to switch to the CDU, seeking to form a government. However, this option seems less likely given the election results and the political climate.

6. BSW abstains from the Minister-President election: The BSW has ruled out participating in selecting the Minister-President, but this scenario could still be hypothetical if they decide to participate after all.
