(Picture Bernama) PAusan declared a state-wide emergency for the entire Serian, Sarawak area three days ago following deteriorating air pollution conditions. The announcement received approval from Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim after considering advice from Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and the perspective of Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg.

However, air pollution conditions in Sarawak are still far from fully recovered, with several areas, particularly Serian and Samarahan, still showing very poor air quality. The federal and Sarawak governments will continue to closely monitor the situation, and residents in affected areas are advised to limit outdoor activities and always follow authority instructions, the statement said.

As of 9 a.m. today, only Samarahan recorded a very poor air quality level of 230, while Serian recorded an IPU index of 195, indicating a poor air quality situation. Last Friday, the entire Serian area was declared a state emergency after the IPU index reached 515, surpassing the danger level of 301 due to cross-border forest fires caused by a fire in Indonesia.

The last state-wide emergency for air pollution was declared in Kuching in September 1997, when the IPU index peaked at 650.
